ATEX / HAC - Classroom Training

About Course

Within Europe all explosion-proof equipment and systems fall under some ATEX (explosive atmosphere) EU Directives. This includes anything used within, or in conjunction with, potentially explosive atmospheres, such as safety, control and regulation devices and protective components, equipment and systems.

Within Europe all explosion-proof equipment and systems fall under some ATEX (explosive atmosphere) EU Directives. This includes anything used within, or in conjunction with, potentially explosive atmospheres, such as safety, control and regulation devices and protective components, equipment and systems.

The basic module provides an overview of ATEX Directives focusing on contents and requirements of 2014/34/EU (Equipment Directive) but also providing an overview of 99/92/EC (Workplace Directive) and Hazardous Area Classification (HAC) process. The extra module can provide a more detailed training on HAC according to the methodology stated in European EN / IEC codes (60079-10-1 and 60079-10-2) and compare it to other international standards such as API 500/505 and EI-15 through the examination of test cases.

Objectives

Participants will develop a general knowledge of ATEX requirements for plant design (starting from HAC), equipment marking and selection, operating and maintenance. The workshop will provide case studies aimed at improving the familiarity with the techniques and methodologies to be applied.

Topics – Basic Module – ATEX & HAC

Overview of EN directives

  1. Purpose of EN directives
  2. Main EN equipment related directives
  3. Pressure Equipment Directive (97/23/EC and upcoming 2014/69/EU)
  4. Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC)
  5. Electromagnetic compatibility Directive (2004/108/EC)
  6. Low Voltage Directive (2006/95/EC)

Essentials of Hazardous Area Classification (HAC)

  1. Explosion principles: gas and dust properties hazards
  2. The ground of ATEX directives: risk assessment
  3. Gas zoning according to IEC 60079-10-1: basic rules and examples
  4. Dust zoning according to IEC 60079-10-2: basic rules and examples
  5. Comparing IEC 60079-10-1/2 and other standards (API RP 500/505, EI-15)

ATEX Equipment Directive (2014/34/EU)

  1. Purpose of the Directive - Review of directive main contents
  2. Essential equipment requirement - Groups & Categories - CE marking requirements
  3. Methods for compliance - Other Directive requirements:
  4. Equipment protection methods overview - Electrical equipment - Non-electrical equipment
  5. Assessment of ignition hazards
  6. Assessing the conformity of existing non-electrical equipment
  7. Management of Changes (MOC)
  8. Overview of IEC Codes on electrical equipment

Overview of ATEX Workplace Directive (99/92/EC)

  1. Purpose of the Directive - Review of Directive main contents
  2. Explosion Protection Document (EDP) - Performing risk assessment - Evaluation of Procedures (including Permit To Work, PTW)

Topics – HAC Extra Module

Hazardous Area Classification (HAC)

1. Review of IEC 60079-10-1 and IEC 60079-10-2 contents

2. Safety principles (risk assessment)

3. Objectives of Hazardous Area Classification (HAC)

4. Importance of HAC in design process

5. Type of Zone: 0, 1 and 2

6. Type of release (continuous, primary and secondary grade)

7. Examples of source of releases

8. Essentials on products release and dispersion phenomena

  1. pressure and temperature;
  2. phases: liquid, vapor and mixed phase

9. Essentials on substance characteristics

  1. Lower Flammable Limit (LFL)
  2. liquid vapor pressure
  3. relative density of vapours and gases

10. Ventilation

  1. importance of ventilation
  2. degrees of ventilation
  3. calculation of ventilation: the IEC 60079-10-1 formula

11. Calculation of release rate: the IEC 60079-10-1 formula

12. Zone extent and shape:

  1. examples of IEC 60079-10-1 and IEC 60079-10-2
  2. simplified formula
  3. analysis of available software

Case study: HAC exercise, including:

- Comparing IEC 60079-10-1 and 60079-10-2 to API RP 500/505 and EI-15 through the investigation of case studies

The exercise will usually be customized on the basis of an effective case
