Hazards and Operability Study (HAZOP) - Classroom Training

About Course

The HAZOP technique is qualitative and aims to stimulate the imagination of participants to identify potential hazards and operability problems.

Hazard and Operability study (HAZOP) is a structured and systematic examination of a planned or existing process or operation that allows to identify and evaluate process hazards that may represent risks to personnel, environment or assets; it is carried out by multi-disciplinary team (HAZOP team) during a set of meetings.

The HAZOP technique is qualitative and aims to stimulate the imagination of participants to identify potential hazards and operability problems.

Objectives

The seminar is designed to allow the attendants to be acquainted on HAZOP technique, allowing identification of hazards, including a semi-quantitative risks assessment. Participants will have the opportunity to simulate a complete exercise from preparation of the drawings to facilitating and recording the analysis. By the end of the workshop participants will understand the key elements of HAZOP approach, preparation, organization thus allowing them to fruitfully participate and contribute to future sessions.

1. Introduction to Risk Management and Assessment

2. HAZOP Terminology (parameter, deviation, guideword, study node, design intent, etc.)

3. Reference documentation

4. Mechanics of the HAZOP Process:

  1. Defining of Nodes
  2. Application of a deviation
  3. Examination of causes
  4. Evaluation of consequences
  5. Identification of safeguards
  6. Semi-quantitative risk assessment
  7. Recommendations

4. Recommendations definition and management of relevant follow up

5. HAZOP Team (members, roles and responsibilities, depth and breadth of experience)

6. Recording the Study (role of recorder, recording format, simultaneous recording and team consensus, P&ID mark up and sign-off, Close-out report)

7. Software for HAZOP

Case study - HAZOP exercise, including:

- Study preparation (team composition, collection of documentation)

- Definition of nodes

- Simulated HAZOP session

The exercise will usually be customized on real cases documents and reports.

Course Language

Training sessions will be basically held in English language, with translation of material and speeches in national language if required.
